Prof. (Dr.) Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon

(4th May 1935 – 8th May 2019) was an eminent jurist and legal educator, considered by many as the father of modern legal education in India. He was the founder-director of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) and the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal and the founder Vice-Chancellor of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS). Prof. Menon was awarded with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, by the Government of India in 2003. Prof. Menon was conferred with the degree of Doctorate in Law (Honoris Causa) by Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal in the year 2016. To commemorate his services towards reforms in legal education, JLU School of Law and Center for Professional Legal Education and Training are organizing One Week Refresher Course for early-career academicians, research scholars and doctoral candidates in the memory of Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon.

The Centre for Professional Legal Education and Training is a community of legal educators, researchers, practitioners and administrators who collaborate in defining, understanding and promoting best practice in the teaching of law. The Centre is specially geared to enhance the quality of teaching and understanding of modern teaching tools and methodologies that are deployed by scholars in the field of Law. In order to bring out the aptitude and analytical skills of the students to help them face competitive exams with ease the centre provides them regular coaching on the subjects as well as training to enhance their communication skills by experts. Refresher Course

This Refresher Course is organised with the aim to provide the participants with an opportunity to acquire knowledge about contemporary developments in the field of law.

  • To uplift theoretical and practical approach of law teachers towards law
  • To make law teachers well versed with contemporary developments in the field of law
  • To touch upon the areas of corporate law, business law, human rights law, criminal law, personal law, environmental law, clinical legal education and research methodology, IPR, Media law, RTI Act, etc.
  • To encourage participation and interaction between law teachers across the nation
After this Refresher Course, the participating law teachers will be aware of various useful teaching skills and teaching tools. Their theoretical and practical approach towards law will be broadened. They will be well versed with emerging contemporary challenges in the law and their future prospects. The interaction between various law teachers across the nation would also be among many outcomes that we aspire to achieve during this one week Refresher Course
This one week Refresher Course will touch upon various laws including Criminal Law, Personal Laws, Corporate Law, Environmental Law, Clinical Legal Education, Research Methodology, Interdisciplinary Teaching and its Challenges, Media Laws, Right to Information, Consumer Protection Law, Competition Law and IPR, Comparative Public Law, Law of Torts, International Law and Human Rights, etc.
The methodology adopted for this refresher course will be a mixed method of Classroom lectures, case study, group discussion and presentation by participants.
